Instructions	Optimal recovery can be directly related to the specimen collected. Tissue and fluid specimens should be submitted whenever possible, they are preferred for recovery of pathogens. If the tissue biopsy specimen is very small, 0.5mL of sterile saline or a small piece of moistened sterile gauze can be added to prevent drying out. CSF a minimum 5-10mL and other sterile body fluids a minimum 5mL; less than this may not have optimal recovery. Swabs are strongly discouraged, unless that is the only specimen available. Unacceptable: Specimens in fixative, viral transport media, or formalin.
