Instructions | At 35 to 37 weeks gestation, vaginal swab specimens are collected from the lower third of the vagina (vaginal introitus - without using a speculum) and from the anal canal (a single swab from the vagina then the anal canal, or a swab collected from each site). Cervical swabs, perianal, perirectal, or perineal specimens are NOT acceptable. Swabs should be set up within 2 days for optimal recovery. However, culturing specimens greater than 24 hours after collection may yield false-negative results and is strongly discouraged. Susceptibility testing is not performed routinely. If susceptibility is needed due to penicillin allergy, please document "Patient is allergic to penicillin, please perform susceptibility if positive" on the requisition. |
