| Instructions | Fluids and tissues are preferred for optimal recovery of pathogens. If a swab is utilized for collection, clean surface of lesions with alcohol first. Transport to the lab as soon as possible. Swab specimens should arrive within 2 days of collection. Specimens should be stored and transported at room temperature. Dry swabs, specimens in non-sterile transport devices, viral media, formalin (or formalin containers), alcohol, or refrigerated and/or frozen specimens are unacceptable. Specimens submitted in EDTA are unacceptable for culture. |
