SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Specimen | Specimen Volume (min) | Specimen Type | Specimen Container | Transport Environment |
Preferred | See Instructions | Swab | Flocked Flexible Mini-Tip Nasopharyngeal Swab | Refrigerated |
Alternate 1 | See Instructions | Saline nasal wash | Sterile Screwtop Container | Refrigerated |
Instructions | Copan's Universal Transport Media (UTM), M4, M5, M6, and Starplex Multitrans are stable up to 72 hours at 2-8 degrees or 25 degrees. Saline nasal washes/aspirates must be refrigerated and tested within 24 hours (or within 4 hours at room temperature). Test sensitivity is optimal with minimally diluted specimens. Therefore, the preferred specimen is a mini-tip nylon flocked swab in 1mL UTM (item 406C from Materials Management). Note: The 1mL UTM provides a concentrated specimen for rapid antigen testing, however, this volume may not be appropriate for some other types of testing. If multiple tests will be ordered from this specimen, please collect additional specimen(s) in 3mL UTM when appropriate. |
